Ten80 2018 NSBE STEM League Finals

A capacity crowd of 49 teams competed in this year’s Ten80 NSBE STEM League Finals at the 44th Annual National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Convention at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA.

Over the two-day event, NSBE JR teams packed the Spirit of Pittsburgh Ballroom A with decked out pit areas showing their team identity in full colors. These pits were decorated with Data Driven Design tri-fold boards, team logos designed by each chapter and other creative ways to carry-out the Team Identity part of the competition.

Volunteer NSBE judges were treated to 8 Minute Board Presentations, Data Driven Design Interviews, and Graphic Design/Team Identity set-ups throughout the competition. While all those interviews were going on, middle school and high school teams competed in face-to-face events on the circuit track and drag strip. Teams have worked throughout the year to optimize their 1:10 scale remote control cars to drive circuit racetracks and oval setups as well as the beloved straight and fast dragstrip. Students learn how different these three types of races are and work to modify their RC car to be the best in each kind of race. Ten80 brought back the Pit Challenge, where pit teams race to the end of the drag strip, change all four tires and race back down the strip to the finish line. All teams truly showcased the 21st Century Skills students cultivate as part of the National STEM League.
